Letter to My Patients

Welcome. Let’s Discover the Science of You.

Dear Patient,

Before we talk about genetics, I want to share why this work matters to me.

I grew up alongside a close relative with a genetic condition at a time when such diagnoses often felt like verdicts. There were few answers. Little guidance. Almost no open conversation. What stayed with me most was the uncertainty — and the quiet guilt carried for decades simply because no one had clearly explained the biology behind what had happened.

Years later, after completing my training in human genetics, I was able to sit down with my family and explain something they had never been told: it was not their fault. There was science behind it. There was explanation. There was context. Watching decades of self-blame soften into understanding shaped the way I practice today.

Because when clarity replaces silence, everything changes.

Today, medicine offers extraordinary tools. We can analyze DNA with remarkable precision, identify inherited risks, and offer prevention and surveillance strategies that were not available a generation ago. And yet — information alone is not enough. Without thoughtful interpretation and guidance, genetic results can still feel overwhelming.

At Scientia Genetics — Scientia meaning the pursuit of knowledge — my mission is to help you understand your genetic information in a way that is clear, grounded, and empowering. Each person’s genetic makeup is unique. Even when two individuals carry a change in the same gene, its meaning may differ depending on personal history, family background, and evolving research. For that reason, I do not approach genetic counseling as a standardized process. I approach it as careful, individualized analysis.

I review your history comprehensively. I examine your results in depth. I consider the full context of your health and your goals. Meaningful genetic counseling requires nuance, attention to detail, and the willingness to look beyond surface conclusions. Your story deserves that level of focus.

But expertise alone is not enough.

Genetic information often intersects with identity, family decisions, and long-term health planning. My role is to translate complex data into clarity — so you understand what it means, what it does not mean, and what options are available to you. Genetics is not destiny. It is information. And when interpreted responsibly, it becomes a tool for proactive, informed decision-making rather than a source of fear.

“Discover the Science of You” reflects a simple belief: when we understand how knowledge is built and applied, we can use it wisely. By understanding the science behind your story, we gain insight — and insight allows us to make meaningful, real-world decisions about your health and future.

At Scientia Genetics, your story is approached with rigor, perspective, and care — so that uncertainty gives way to understanding, and understanding gives way to confidence.

If you would like to discuss your concerns or explore whether genetic counseling is right for you, I welcome you to schedule a consultation.

When you’re ready, I am here.

Warmly,

Should I Get Genetic Counseling?

Discover Your Genetic Questions
A Guided Self-Reflection

Genetics touches many moments in life — from planning a family, to understanding a child’s health, to exploring inherited risks or unanswered medical questions.
If you’re wondering whether genetic counseling might be helpful for you, start by choosing the situation that best reflects where you are in life. Each path offers a few questions to help you reflect.
There are no right or wrong answers — only opportunities to better understand your story.

Choose Your Path

You might consider genetic counseling if you have wondered:

• Should I consider carrier screening before starting a family?
• What do prenatal genetic screening tests actually tell me?
• How might genetics influence the health of a future child?
• Are there inherited conditions in my family that I should understand more clearly?

If these questions resonate with you, a genetic counseling consultation can help you understand available testing options and make informed decisions with confidence.

Parents sometimes seek genetic counseling when they are trying to understand a child’s health more fully.

You may have wondered:

• Could genetics help explain my child’s medical or developmental differences?
• Should my child have genetic testing recommended by a doctor?
• Are multiple medical findings connected in some way?

Genetic counseling can help explore possible explanations and guide next steps in care.

Adults Seeking Genetic Insight

Many people explore genetics simply to better understand their own health.

You might wonder:

• Could genetics help explain a health condition I developed?
• Should I pursue genetic testing recommended by a physician?
• What preventive steps might be available based on inherited risk?

Genetic counseling translates genetic information into clear, practical guidance.

You may have noticed patterns in your family’s health.

Questions sometimes arise such as:

• Why do certain conditions appear repeatedly in my family?
• Does my family history affect my own health risks?
• Should I consider genetic testing based on family history?

Genetic counseling can help interpret family history and determine whether genetic testing may provide helpful insight.

Genetics can sometimes influence how our bodies process medications.

You might have asked:

• Why do certain medications affect me differently than expected?
• Could genetic testing help guide medication choices?
• Would pharmacogenetic testing be helpful for me?

Genetic insights can sometimes support more personalized treatment decisions.

Some individuals seek genetic counseling during a longer search for answers.

You may wonder:

• Could genetics explain a medical condition that remains unclear?
• Are there additional tests that might uncover an underlying cause?
• Could new research offer insight into previously unexplained symptoms?

Genetic counseling can help review prior testing, explore additional possibilities, and consider emerging research.

A Thought to Take With You

If one or more of these questions resonates with you, it does not necessarily mean there is cause for concern. Often it simply means there is an opportunity to better understand the science behind your health or your family history.

At Scientia Genetics, the goal of genetic counseling is not to create worry — it is to replace uncertainty with understanding.

When we discover the science behind your story, we gain the knowledge needed to make thoughtful decisions about health, family, and the future.

If you would like to explore your questions further, I welcome you to schedule a consultation.
